Soto Zen Buddhism is one of
the three branches of Zen Buddhism in Japan,
the other two being Rinzai and Obaku.
It was established by Zen Master Dogen in the 13th century and emphasizes "Shikantaza", a specific approach to meditation also known as "just sitting".
Authentic Soto Zen practice can be experienced at the Mt. Equity Zendo Monastery, located just outside Williamsport, PA. Under the direction of Abbess Dai-En Bennage since 1990, it hosts a thriving community of devoted practitioners and monks.
